Winter 2025 CHI Quarterly

Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly Volume 98 Number 4 (Winter 2025)

Just in time for your winter reading pleasure!  The Winter 2025 issue of the Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly (Volume 98, Number 4) provides articles on Lutheran organs and Lutheran basketball. Additionally, it provides our annual Awards of Commendation for 2024 publications, as well as our bibliography of works on Lutheran history from 2025.

AWARDS BANQUET

After Dr. Wohlrabe’s column, “About This Issue”, we provide the invocation offered at the Annual Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting by Vicar Tim Good. Following this prayer, the Rev. Ted Krey, regional director for South and Central American and the Carribean missions, presents his awards banquet speech, “Remember, Repent, Rejoice”, the theme of the 125th anniversary of Missouri Synod work in Brazil.

ARTICLES

The first article is by Benjamin A. Kolodziej, entitled, “The First Organ in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod”. He provides an excellent historical analysis of his investigation on this topic.

The second article is by Roger L. Brauer, entitled, “Preachers’ Basketball Team Gains National Recognition”. It looks at the 1930-1931 Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis basketball team and their accomplishments, both regionally and nationally.

AWARDS OF COMMENDATION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

Two items straddle the previously mentioned articles. First, the awards of commendation at the Annual Awards Banquet are listed. Next, the Rev. Todd D. Zittlow, CHI’s archivist, and the Rev. Dr. Daniel N. Harmelink, CHI’s executive director,  provide “Lutheran History in North America: A Bibliography of Works Published in 2025.”

The two items appear on the CHI website, the former in a table and the latter in a post.

 BOOK REVIEWS

The first review, by Molly Lackey, is for “Paul Leo: Pastor with Jewish Roots in Flight from Nazism” by Craig L. Nessan and Carsten Linden.

The second review, by James A. Neuendorf, is for “Caribbean Lutherans: The History of the Church in Puerto Rico” by Jose David Rodriguez.

The third and final review, by B. Keith Haney, is for “A Rumor of Black Lutherans: The Formation of Black Leadership in Early American Lutheranism“, by James R. Thomas.
