Fall 2024 CHI Quarterly

Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly Fall 2024 (Volume 97, Number 3)

As the Year of Our Lord 2024 is the 100th anniversary of KFUO Radio, the Fall 2024 issue of the Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly (Volume 97, Number 3) looks at the use of radio to spread the Gospel. It accomplishes this through four articles.

ARTICLES

The first of these articles is by Dr. Kirk Farney, entitled, “KFUO: The Beginnings of the ‘Supermissionary of the Air'”. He documents the early formation and history of KFUO Radio from the early 1920s to 1930.

Pastor Edward C. Werner (1913-1986) provides us with the second article, entitled, “‘Noble Christians,’ Revelation 1:5-6 – Radio Message September 5, 1959”. He provides, through his daughter, one of his radio messages from Columbus, Nebraska to the listeners in rural Nebraska. These messages became possible because of the efforts of the Daily Devotions Broadcasting Association.

The third article, entitled, “In Their Own Words: An Oral History of Issues, Etc.”, is by Concordia Seminary graduate student Michael R. Wilke. Up until now, there has not been a history of Issues, Etc. written. What better way than to get the originators of the program to provide their recollections of the popular radio program.

The fourth, and last article, entitled, “Seizing an Occasion: 1980s LCMS Gospel Broadcasting on Commercial Radio Stations in Fort Wayne”, is by the Rev. Dr. Ken Schurb. In his first-hand account, he details the utilization of commercial radio to spread the Gospel in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area.

BOOK REVIEWS

The first review, by David Fleming, is for “Missionary to America. E.A. Brauer“, by David F. Brauer.
