Winter 2024 CHI Quarterly

Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly Volume 97 Number 4

When is Winter going to end? Not before the Winter 2024 issue of the Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly (Volume 97, Number 4) arrives in your mailbox! This issue provides two articles that look at the American Experiment through Lutheran eyes. Additionally, it provides our annual Awards of Commendation for 2023 publications, as well as our bibliography of works on Lutheran history from 2024.

AWARDS BANQUET

After Dr. Wohlrabe’s column, “About This Issue”, we provide the invocation offered at the Annual Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting by the Rev. Dr. Daniel N. Harmelink.

ARTICLES

The first article is by the Rev. Dr. Gregory P. Seltz, entitled, “Religious Liberty Efforts of the Missouri Synod in the American Political Experiment.” This was his speech for the Awards Banquet, which documented the ways that the LCMS has stayed focused on its two kingdoms theology while sometimes having to step in where there is government overreach.

Pastor Andrew Soule, a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, provides the second article, entitled, “‘Nineteenth Century Lutheran Pastors Ask, ‘How is Our America Doing?'”. He looks at the positions of Ulrik V. Koren and C. F. W. Walther concerning the issue of slavery during the American Civil War.

AWARDS OF COMMENDATION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

The final section of articles provides two of CHI’s own. First, provided are the awards of commendation at the Annual Awards Banquet. Next, the Rev. Todd Zittlow, CHI’s archivist, provides “Lutheran History in North America: A Bibliography of Works Published in 2024.”

The two items appear on the CHI website, the former in a table and the latter in a PDF document.
