Starting to plan those summer trips? How about a trip to Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee with the Henkels? The Spring 2025 issue of the Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly (Volume 98, Number 1) will take you on just such a journey! This issue provides three articles that focus on the Henkel Family, the first two on Polycarp Cyprian Henkel and the last on David Henkel.
ARTICLES
The first article is by the Rev. Dr. B. Steve Hughey, entitled, “Rev. Dr. Polycarp Cyprian Henkel, Pioneer Lutheran Pastor, Defender of the Faith, and Missionary.” This article, written by a descendent of the Henkel family, introduces us to the man and his work.
Hughey transcribed the English diary of P.C. Henkel, which he presents in the second article, “P.C. Henkel Missionary Diary”. This diary was kept when Henkel made his missionary journey through Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas in 1874.
The third and last article is by the Rev. Dr. Frederic W. Baue, entitled, “Tennessee and Missouri – Why Form Another Synod?”. This article was presented at the 2022 Walther Roundtable. His article looks at the Tennessee Synod, formed in 1820, and the reasons, both pro and con, why the Missouri Synod didn’t unite with the Tennessee Synod.
