1868 C. F. (Charles Fox) Burney, Anglican Bible scholar, was born (d. 1925). Ordained in 1893, he spent his entire career at Oxford as a lecturer in Hebrew (1893-1897),  university librarian (1897-1908) and Oriel professor on the interpretation of Holy Scripture (1914-1925). He was a noted authority on Semitic languages and one of the most original thinkers among scholars of his generation. Burney stressed the importance of recognizing an Aramaic foundation underlying the language of the New Testament Gospels. His most important publications include Outlines of Old Testament Theology (1899) and The Aramaic Origin of the Fourth Gospel (1922).
