Ordained in 1893, he spent his entire career at Oxford as a lecturer in Hebrew (1893-1897), university librarian (1897-1908) and Oriel professor on the interpretation of Holy Scripture (1914-1925). He was a noted authority on Semitic languages and one of the most original thinkers among scholars of his generation.
