1810 Ralph Harrison, composer, died at Manchester, Lancashire, England (b. 10 September 1748, Chinley, Derbyshire, England).

1826 Timothy R. Matthews, Anglican hymn writer, was born in Colmworth, England (d. 5 January 1910).

1838 Andrew Martin Fairbairn, British Congregational theologian, was born in Fife, Scotland (d. 1912).

1847 Felix Mendelssohn, composer, died in Germany (b. 3 February 1809).

1855 The Evangelical Lutheran Free Church in Denmark founded by N. P. Grunnet.

1866 J. Lincoln Hall, American sacred music composer, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (d. 29 November 1930, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

1867 Franz Edward Mohn, Missouri Synod missionary to India, was born in Weisstropp, near Dresden, Germany (d. 18 June 1925).

1868 C. F. (Charles Fox) Burney, Anglican Bible scholar, was born (d. 1925). Ordained in 1893, he spent his entire career at Oxford as a lecturer in Hebrew (1893-1897),  university librarian (1897-1908) and Oriel professor on the interpretation of Holy Scripture (1914-1925). He was a noted authority on Semitic languages and one of the most original thinkers among scholars of his generation. Burney stressed the importance of recognizing an Aramaic foundation underlying the language of the New Testament Gospels. His most important publications include Outlines of Old Testament Theology (1899) and The Aramaic Origin of the Fourth Gospel (1922).

1903 Watchman (Henry) Nee, Chinese Christian author, was born in Swatow, China (d. 30 May 1972).

1924 Charles C. Luther (b. 17 May 1847), American Baptist evangelist and hymnist, died.

1995 Robert D. Preus, professor at Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) and president of Concordia Theological Seminary (Springfield, Illinois, and Fort Wayne, Indiana), died in Shorewood, Minnesota (b. 16 October 1924).
