1873 Traugott Martin Wangerin, missionary to the deaf in Milwaukee, was born (d. 9 September 1951).

1884 Wm. Carl Burhop was born in Fraser, Michigan (d. 7 November 1966). He graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1908 and served as pastor of Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Kansas City, Missouri, 19081912) and Redeemer Lutheran Church (Baltimore, Maryland, 19121917). He was a professor at Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana, 19171926) and president of the college there beginning in 1926.

1892 James L. Kelso, American Presbyterian archeologist, was born in Duluth, Minnesota (d. 1963).

1919 Friedrich Eich, missionary to New Guinea, died (b. 20 January 1843, Dierdorf, Germany).

1943 Max John Frederick Albrecht, president of Concordia College (Milwaukee) from 1893 to 1921 and professor there from 1893 to 1937, died (b. 10 March 1861).

1970 John T. Scopes died (b. 3 August 1900). He was a Tennessee high school biology teacher who in 1925 went on trial for violating the Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools.

1989 Carl H. Bensene, former president of the Missouri Synods Northwest District, died in Portland, Oregon (b. 2 April 1902, Tess Corners, Wisconsin). A 1926 graduate of Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis), he served congregations in Stillwater and Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Seattle, Washington. He was vice-president of the Northwest District from 1945 until 1948, when he was elected president. He retired in 1970.
