He graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1908 and served as pastor of Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Kansas City, Missouri, 1908–1912) and Redeemer Lutheran Church (Baltimore, Maryland, 1912–1917). He was a professor at Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1917–1926) and president of the college there beginning in 1926.

1989 Carl H. Bensene, former president of the Missouri Synod’s Northwest District, died in Portland, Oregon (b. 2 April 1902, Tess Corners, Wisconsin). A 1926 graduate of Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis), he served congregations in Stillwater and Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Seattle, Washington. He was vice-president of the Northwest District from 1945 until 1948, when he was elected president. He retired in 1970.
