1636 Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury, was born (d. 14 December 1715).

1637 Lorenzo Ruiz, Filipino saint, died (b. ca. 1600).

1691 Richard Challoner, English Catholic prelate, was born (d. 12 January 1781).

1803 The first Roman Catholic Church in Boston was formally dedicated. Catholics had been granted religious freedom by the Massachusetts constitution of 15 June 1780.

1829 Louis Lange was born in Zennern, Kreisfritzer, Kurhesse, Germany (d. 1893). He was the publisher of both Die Abendschule and Die Rundschau in Saint Louis.

1838 The Missionary Board of the Reformed (German) Church in the United States was organized. The board supported missionaries sent by other agencies until 1865, when it began sending its own missionaries to the Winnebago Indians in Wisconsin and to Japan.

1841 August Reinke, founder of LCMS deaf missions, was born in Winsen, Hannover, Germany (d. 18 November 1899).

1852Wilhelm Grönning, missionary to India, was born in Guntur, India (d. 9 July 1889).

1868Lorrin Andrews, Hawaiian missionary and translator of the Bible into Hawaiian, died (b. 29 April 1795).

1889 Polycarp C. Henkel, first president of Concordia College (Conover, North Carolina), died (b. 23 August 1820 near Conover, North Carolina).

1890 The Chicago Presbytery petitioned the Chicago Board of Education to have the Bible read in the public schools.

1896 Ernst August Brauer, professor of exegesis, logic and isagogics at Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis), died (b. 19 April 1819, Northeim, Hannover).

1901 John Sung, outstanding Christian missionary in China and Southeast Asia, was born Siong Chiat Sung in Hinghwa, China (d. 18 August 1944).

1902 The Porto Alegre, Brazil, mission of the Missouri Synod was begun.

1907 The cornerstone was laid at the Washington National Cathedral.

1936 Lewis Herman Schuh, president of Capital University (Columbus, Ohio), died (b. 7 July 1858, Galion, Ohio).

1941 Samuel Wilhelm Hermann Daib (b. 26 August 1862, Sugar Grove, Ohio) died. He attended Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis), from which he graduated in 1884. He served parishes in Wittenberg, Tigerton and Merrill, Wisconsin. In 1906 he was elected president of the Wisconsin District and served that district and the North Wisconsin District in that capacity until 1936. He also founded the Wisconsin Church Mutual Fire Insurance Association and held its presidency until his death.

1963 The second session of the Second Vatican Council was opened in Rome by Pope Paul VI (18971978). This session lasted through December 4.

1990 The Washington National Cathedral was completed.
