1620 The Pilgrims sailed the Mayflower from England to seek religious liberty in America. The 102 Separatists left because of persecution on account of their dissension from the state church.

1646 Magnus D. Omeis, hymnist, was born at Nürnberg (d. 22 November 1708, Altdorf).

1711 Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America, was born in Einbeck, Hanover, Prussia (d. 7 October 1787).

1777 Ernest Lewis Hazelius, Lutheran seminary professor at Hartwig, New York; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; and Lexington, South Carolina, was born in Neusalz, Silesia (d. 20 February 1853).

1807 Friedrich Schmid(t), pioneer Lutheran pastor in and around Ann Arbor, Michigan, was born in Daldorf, Wuerttemberg, Germany (d. 30 August 1883). He was educated at Basel and sent by the Basel Mission Society to America in 1833.

1839 Samuel H. Kellogg, American Presbyterian missionary and scholar was born at Quogue, New York (d. 1899).

1849 Eduard Raimund Baierlein (1819–1901), missionary to the Indians in Michigan, was ordained and installed.

1860 Jane Addams, settlement worker, founder of Hull House and author, was born in Cedarville, Illinois (d. 21 May 1935, Chicago).

1869 Henry W. Davies, hymnist, was born (d. 11 March 1941).

1901 Albert Frederick Bayly, Congregational minister and hymnist, was born at Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, England (d. 26 July 1984).

1918 The National Lutheran Council was organized at Chicago.

1938 The Academy Award-winning movie Boys Townwas released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studios. Starring Spencer Tracy, the film depicted the 1922 founding of the famous character-building Boys Town vocational institution in Nebraska by Roman Catholic parish priest Father Edward J. Flanagan (18861948).

1953 Colegio la Concordia (Caracas, Venezuela) was dedicated.

1970 Frederick Henry Stephen Hassold, LCMS missionary to New Zealand, died (b. 22 January 1882, Huntington, Indiana). He was educated at Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, Missouri) and went as a missionary to New Zealand in 1905.

1978 Seattle Lutheran High School opened with eighty-five ninth-and-tenth grade students.
