1856 Ahad (Achad) Ha-am, Jewish thinker and Zionist leader in Ukraine, was born (d. 1927).

1976 A postage stamp honoring Clara Maass (1876-1901), Lutheran nurse who gave her life in the fight against yellow fever, was issued. Born at East Orange, New Jersey.
