1460 Blessed Anthony Neyrot (in Italian: Antonio) (b. 1425), an Italian Dominican priest, apostate to Islam and reconvert to Christianity, was martyred on Holy Thursday.

1521 Philipp Melanchthon’s (14971560) Loci Communes was published.

1583 Hugo Grotius (Hugo de Groot), Arminian statesman and theologian and a Dutch jurist, was born in Delft, Netherlands (d. 28 August 1645).

1585 Pope Gregory XIII died. He was born Ugo Boncompagni on 7 January 1502. He served as pope from 1572 to his death.

1657 Johann Ernestus Gutwasser, the first Lutheran pastor in New York, was ordained.

1795 Karl Rudolph Demme, active in liturgical and hymnological work, was born in Germany (d. 1 September 1863).

1802 Johann Peter Lange, German Reformed New Testament exegete, was born in Elberfeld, Prussia (d. 9 July 1884).

1816 Richard Allen (17601831) became the first elected bishop of the new African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church.

1821 Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople was hanged by the Turks from the main gate of the Patriarchate and his body was thrown into the Bosphorus.

1827 Wilhelm Streissguth, president of the Wisconsin Synod, was born in Lahr, duchy of Baden, Germany (d. 20 May 1915).

1829 William Booth, founder and first General of the Salvation Army, was born in Nottingham, England (d. 20 August 1912).

1838 Edward Kremser, German chorister, was born in Vienna, Austria (d. 27 November 1914).

1858 Adolph Friedrich Theodor Biewend died (b. 6 May 1816). He was a professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1849-1850, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, 1850 until his death.

1861 Gottfried John Wegener was born in Bremen, Germany (d. 25 November 1946, New Orleans, Louisiana). He was a graduate of Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1882 and served as a pastor at Dieterich and Altamont, Illinois, and at Saint Paul Lutheran Church (New Orleans). He was president of the Southern District from 1891 to 1927 and president of the Bethlehem Orphan Home in New Orleans for twenty-five years.

1864 Calvin Francis Kuder, Lutheran missionary to India, was born at Laurys, Pennsylvania (d. 8 September 1935).

1865 Victor George Augustine Tressler, president of the General Synod, was born in Somerfield, Pennsylvania (d. 1 September 1923).

1899 John R. Sweney (b. 31 December 1837), American chorister, died.

1905 Joseph Francis Fletcher, American Episcopalian ethicist, was born in Newark, New Jersey (d. 1991).

1907 The Lutheran Seminary at Porto Alegre, Brazil, was opened.

1912 Ernst Christian Achelis, leader in the Reformed Church of Germany, died (b. 13 January 1838).

1933 Henry van Dyke (b. 1852), American Presbyterian clergyman, died.

1945 U.S. armed forces liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany.

1955 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (b. 1 May 1881), French Jesuit priest and paleontologist, died.

1979 A tornado in the Wichita Falls, Texas, area destroyed the facilities of the Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ.

1995 Martin Luther Koehneke died (b. 11 April 1916). He graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1939 and served parishes in Texas and Illinois. From 1949 to 1950 he served as a circuit counselor and from 1950 to 1954 he was the counselor for parish education in the Texas District. He later served as president of Concordia Teachers College (River Forest, Illinois). From 1972 until his retirement in 1981 he was the senior vice-president of the Aid Association for Lutherans.
