Artifact: Walther League Scrapbook
Date: 1928-1930
Significance: In honor of the 120th anniversary of Dr. Walter A. Maier’s birth (October 4, 1893), this week’s featured artifact is a Walther League scrapbook. Maier was heavily involved in the Walther League, the Missouri Synod’s national youth organization, during his ministry, serving as the organization’s executive secretary from 1920 to 1922. He remained as the editor of the Walther League Messenger even after joining the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, serving as the publication’s editor for a total twenty-five years.
The scrapbook (titled “All Over with the Walther League from City to City”) belonged to Edna Telle of St. Louis, who was involved with the Walther League in the late 1920s. It is an interesting look at what the Walther League was like during its heyday. Photographs included range from sightseeing in various cities to summertime at Camp Arcadia, and from group shots of Walther Leaguers to fun events like balloon races and cracker-eating contests.
