The Coin and Medal Collection of Concordia Historical Institute

CHI Coin and Medal Collection

The Reformation Coin and Medal Collection of Concordia Historical Institute (CHI) is one of the most significant institutional collections outside of Germany.

High quality digital photography of the 835-piece collection is displayed in this book. Detailed descriptions of each piece include information on weight, diameter, visual elements, legends, designer, and mint. Also included are references from numismatic reference works and recent auctions. Legends, Scripture references, locations, diameters, persons, and visual elements are also indexed.

This volume is designed for those just beginning to appreciate Reformation numismatics as an important visual witness to the truths re-discovered by Martin Luther and the Reformation. It also serves as a reference work for future research in numismatics, history, theology, the visual arts, culture, and language.

With the publication of this comprehensive catalog, Concordia Historical Institute renews its commitment to move Reformation numismatics forward. Believing that the numismatic art continues to be an important medium that gives witness to Christ’s redeeming work in the 500-year history of the Reformation, CHI continues to seek generous donors who share our dedication to this significant area of study by expanding our coin and medal collection or funding research that will inform and inspire both church and community.
